PA 521 History and Foundations of the Nonprofit Sector

Provides students with an overview of the historical and theoretical foundations of the U.S. nonprofit sector as a sector distinct from the government and for-profit sectors. It explores the social, political, and economic theories of nonprofit organizations as well as the meaning and history of related concepts such as voluntarism and philanthropy. It examines both the mainstream conceptions of the nonprofit sector and nonprofit organizations as well as those that have been systematically marginalized over time.
