Admission Requirements

Limitations
Anthropology majors should consult an academic area adviser no later than the beginning of junior year. Selection of appropriate courses to supplement the student’s major work should be made in consultation with the adviser. Anthropology majors will not be permitted to offer more than 72 credits of work in anthropology for the bachelor’s degree. This limitation will be waived only through petition to the academic area.

In addition to meeting the general University degree requirements, the anthropology major must meet minimum academic area requirements as follows:
Courses
Students earning the B.S. are required to take Stat 244
NOTE: Anthropology B.A. majors must complete two years of a foreign language or demonstrate equivalent proficiency.

Elective requirements
Students are required to take 20 upper division elective credits including at least one methods course (i.e., Anth 412, Anth 415, Anth 452, Anth 453, Anth 454, Anth 455, Anth 477, Anth 478, Anth 479). At least 12 of the 20 credits must be in 400-level courses. Four of the 20 credits may be in omnibus numbered-courses (i.e., Anth 401, Anth 404, Anth 405, Anth 407), and four of the 20 credits may be in 200-level anthropology courses approved by the academic area.
Four of the required 20 elective credits may be taken on a pass/no pass basis; all other anthropology courses used to satisfy the academic area major requirements must be taken for a letter grade and must have been assigned a grade of C- or better. Courses taken outside the School as part of academic area requirements (i.e. Ling 232, Ling 233, Ling 390 or Stat 244, World Languages and Literatures courses) may be taken pass/no pass (subject to the University limitations on the maximum number of hours taken pass/no pass) or for a letter grade. However, students who take these courses for a letter grade must earn a C- or better. Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better in all courses required for the anthropology bachelor’s degree (including those courses taken outside the School as part of academic area requirements).
Eight of the required 20 Anthropology major elective credits may be pre-approved Complex Systems, Environmental Science and Management, Geology, Geography, Environmental Science and Management, and Native American Studies courses, with a maximum of 4 of these non-Anthropology credits at the 400-level.
