Mth 592 Ethnomathematics

Designed for prospective or in-service K-16 mathematics teachers. Learners interrogate the intersection of two otherwise disparate academic subjects – mathematics and culture, and examine the process of knowledge construction in mathematics with attention to the complex role that culture plays in augmenting, supporting, and valorizing it. To be explored in depth are the ethical possibilities of teaching mathematics as a tool for analyzing, and acting upon, issues of importance to students, their communities, and humankind in general.
