BA in Applied Linguistics + MA in TESOL

Program Specific Admission Requirements


Undergraduates interested in the B+M program must meet the following admission requirements at the time of the application deadline, 1 May.

  • Students must meet with the department undergraduate adviser before applying.

  • A minimum GPA of 3.50 in Applied Linguistics courses.

  • A minimum PSU institutional GPA of 3.30.

  • Undergraduate credits: On track to complete at least 138 undergraduate credits towards the bachelor’s degree by fall term of senior year (the term in which the B+M program would begin).

  • Residency requirements: 

    • At least 24 undergraduate credits must be taken in the department prior to admission to the MA program.

    • The PSU institutional requirement is that 45 of the last 60 credits must be taken in residence at PSU.

Program Specific Continuation Requirements

 

Once admitted into the B+M program students must meet the following requirements in order to transition directly from the Bachelor’s to the Master’s program:

  • While being admitted into the B+M program and completing the BA degree guarantees admission into the MA program, students must still formally apply to the MA program via Slate by the department deadline for MA applications for the intended quarter of admission, as indicated on the department website.

  • Students must complete their Bachelor’s degree by 31 August in the year after they are admitted to the B+M program in order to matriculate into the MA program.

  • During senior year as an undergraduate, students complete four 500-level courses which count for both BA and MA degrees. These must be chosen in consultation with the advisor.

  • All 500-level courses shared between the two degrees must be taken at PSU for a grade of B or better. P/NP grades are not allowed.

  • All undergraduate courses must receive a grade of C or better. P/NP grades are not allowed.

  • Students must maintain a PSU institutional GPA of 3.3 in 500-level courses while admitted at the undergraduate level. Students must also maintain a 3.5 GPA in 400-level and lower-level courses in order to maintain their status in the B+M program.

Program Application Procedures

  • By May 1 students must submit the following materials via the application form:

    • Application Essay outlining your goals, reasons why the accelerated pathway is a good fit for you. Due to the highly demanding coursework, address your ability to complete both degrees on the accelerated pathway. 

    • References: Two letters of recommendation from current professors in the Applied Linguistics department.

    • Unofficial transcripts
