CFS 313 Mothers, Mothering, and Motherwork

Explores the institution of motherhood, referring to the roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the course examines motherhood as an institution, mothering as lived experiences, and motherwork as community-based care work. Students will study maternal identity, mothering practices, mother-child relationships, caregiving labor, maternal activism, and representations of mothers. Emphasis is placed on intersectional perspectives, analyzing how race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability intersect with motherhood.
