Health promotion is a vital component of the healthcare continuum: it is a proactive approach to health care that stresses prevention using various strategies with the ultimate goal of keeping people well. The focus of health promotion rests in comprehensive community- level interventions that are aimed to influence the environment in which people live, work, and learn. Health Promotion and Education is comprised of:

  • Wellness & Health Action Team (WHAT): Peer health educators that inform the community about relevant health topics and available resources; develop engaging programs on campus to promote healthy decision-making; empower students to utilize accessible strategies to achieve long-term health; and advocate for change in campus policies that facilitate student wellbeing and success.
  • Mental Health Promotion: Encompasses trauma-informed trainings for faculty, staff, and students who serve other students, suicide prevention programming and support and advocacy for students in recovery including those involved with the Collegiate Recovery Community student organization.

  • Peer Recovery Center: Located in the SHAC Health Promotion Suite (UCB 340), 1:1 connection to students in recovery from substance use, or students interested in exploring recovery, as well as weekly drop-in support groups to cultivate positive coping skills, and community-building with other PSU students in recovery. https://www.pdx.edu/health-counseling/peer-recovery-support
