Comparative analysis of literary works, films, and other cultural manifestations by authors from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Emphasis on how these authors articulate local identities distinct from the hegemonic Russian ideology. Timeframe ranges from the Russian Imperial era, through the Soviet period, to the present day. Topics include resistance to Russian imperialism; Soviet political, economic, and environmental legacies; and the role of Islam in society.
