Art 260 Black and White Photography

Introduction to black and white analogue photography including 35mm camera controls; film processing, printing, and scanning; and other darkroom techniques. Assignments focus on two dimensional design principles of line, shape, pattern, texture, symmetry, asymmetry, and vantage point, and culminate in a coherent photo story. While learning basic photographic techniques, students discuss form, content, and the aesthetics of photographic image-making. Studio includes lecture, demonstration, critique, and supervised lab work. Students must furnish a 35 mm film camera with adjustable f-stops and shutter speeds. Automatic cameras must have manual override. Expected preparation for Art & Art History Majors: Art 101, Art 102, Art 103, Art 104, and Art 105.
